Retirement Place Reviews

Which is the best suburb around Brisbane for a young couple?

My boyfriend's dad lives near Woolloongabba, so we were thinking of maybe moving up there for a while, rent a small unit (as they are so much cheaper than in Sydney!)... but I dont know the area at all, so I'm looking for suggestions! We are a young couple (I'm 20, he's 27), but not really into the whole drinking clubbing thing... we'd much rather be near a great big shopping centre, some nice parks, a gym, public transport, and in a safe and friendly neighbourhood. We dont want to pay more than $250/week for a 2 bedroom apartment, so it has to be all of the above but with nice affordable rentals!! Any help would be appreciated... I dont want to end up moving to a giant retirement suburb, or a neighbourhood where I wont feel safe!

  1. Woolongabba and East Brisbane are the type of places you're looking for, but be warned as housing around there is not cheap since it's near the city. You could try getting a place at Toowong or Taringa (also near the city) where there's a Shopping Village etc. My best suggestion would be Carindale. There's a range of cheap--> expensive housing and there's a huge shopping centre, easy access to bus transport and small local shopping villages (eg Metropol). The next best thing to Carindale is Carina, which is abour 5-10 minutes away. Carindale is not that far from the city by bus. If you go on the express route it'll take 40mins tops. As for buses to the UQ, i'm not too sure, but i think there's a new line coming in that'll go straight to the campus via a new bridge...like i said still unsure. A new town house/flat area is being built right outside the Carindale shopping centre so you may be able to find reasonable accomodation there! Good luck and welcome to Brissie~~~
  2. This is a tough one because rental properties are getting hard to find in that price range. A 2 b/r would be a minimum of $250 anywhere close to the amenties you want and if you need to be near W'gabba. Try Annerley, Dutton Park, Carindale, Mt Gravatt, Coorparoo - all affordable and near shopping centres on the southside. Public transport is OK. Brisbane is getting very congested with traffic problems so try for close to a train line.
  3. Good luck finding something in Brisbane that is nice, safety, trendy, near ammenities and under $250/week. Things aren't as bad as Sydney but it is pretty hard to find rental properties in Brisbane at the moment with many properties going to dutch auction (seriously). Perhaps you could try Chermside, it has a big shopping centre will all of the ammenties but is a combination of young families and the grey set. Maybe do a search on RealEstate.com.au for Chermside and surrounds with your price range.. cheers
  4. I live on the northside of Brissy and love it.I live in Arana Hills-it's got everything really-20 mins from city, lots of kids.plenty of shopping centres (Chermside is huge!),good schools.(I'm bias of course. I'm sure you'd find a unit or small house on the northside.
  5. Ok... aim for the Carindale area... good shopping centre and close to a gym and parks. Also within 10mins of Wooloongabba and far enough out of the city to have less traffic..... no train but good bus service. Thats on the southside. Look at the rental market online and aim for Carindale, Carina and surrounding areas.
