Can property sellers in UK sell a retirement apartment to young people ? I'm actually 24 and I have a partner together we want to buy a house/or a flat in England .Our problem is that we find it really hard to find the right house , and all the retirement flats are really cheap, big, and beautiful they are always located in a great area too. I don't know why the government makes such an exception about age . Because of this '' Unfair discrimination''about age we don't make any chance of buying a nice house cuz they are all over 60's. And for all the other people who wait for Council properties the government makes an exeption too ,most of them are over 60. The society doesn't do anything for young people, they have to live in a small studio flats and wait for ages to get a house from the Council. Thanks
Has anyone bought a retirement place in Hove or Brighton? I am wondering whether to move to the seaside when I retire and was interested in the Brighton area because there is plenty going on. I'd be interested to hear about those retirement apartments (eg. Mccarthy & Stone) you see advertised.
Would you rather stay in your big house alone or have the company of senior citizens in retirement apartments? lol..Mr edd...my mother has 2 bathrooms and 1 bedroom...lol in the apartments most people are 60yrs and upwards...they really do have fun if they want to...or quiet times in there own space When i say Retirement Flats...the only difference is that they have the emergency buttons inall the rooms and a onboard carer..on the outside you wouldnt know they were just for the retired...its not like a retirement home right ok...pretend your 90yrs old ...isnt it better than an old folks home if your a couple its ok thinking its best to live alone ..but when your patner dies and you have no family or friends left near you..its a very sorry life...i moved my mother a long way to live near me in one of those flats...because i lived with her and i missed my family its been a struggle for 10 months...now she loves it and wishes when dad was alive they had did it together
What are some good combined retirement and birthday party ideas? My mom retires Friday after 33 years at her job as a secretary. My nephew's 5th birthday is on the same day. I want to throw them a small, family only party. I want to have my sister, her husband, my niece (age 6), my father and boyfriend attend. I plan on having the party at my parent's house (my apartment is too small) on Friday evening. I want it to be more elegant for my mom but also fun for my nephew. I would like to serve appetizers and cook a special dinner something kid friendly yet elegant (chicken parmesan or salisbury steak). Maybe separate cakes (vanilla for mom, chocolate for nephew), cheap champagne to toast the retirement and sparkling cider to toast the birthday, etc...(this is where you fill in your ideas on things)

My husband reach 62 last last Aug 2006.He filed for his retirement and disability benefit last May 06 & should have his 1st check last Oct.Until now he did not have his check. We do not know where it is.He told me to check at it in his personal email and apartment but i cant log on to his email coz his daughter(who hate me and our child) change the password.I didn't care changing the password before when i have access to it coz i trust her & dont want to deprive her of her rights. When she does that she and her family no longer visit my husband in the hospital 7months now, though she lives very near him.I live in Philippines and can't check his mail at his apartment or at the post office.I wish there is a way i can.Can SS office do a visit to my husband to solve this problem?or can i contact them in behalf of my husband? What must i do?its no problem with me IF her other daughter got the check if only they were not ignoring my husband in the hospital. My husband have a stroke but can talk.
Cost of living in Israel for retirement? What is the least amount of money per month that is practical to live on in Israel? Which are the least expensive cities to live in on a fixed income? How far does a dollar go? For example, what is the cost in $ for a small apartment? Is there such a thing as mobile homes in Israel?
What is the best way to go about purchasing property in another country? One of my long term goals (for retirement or before) is to own a couple of homes or apartments in other countries. I am just wondering if anyone has experience with this... I am sure every market is different but in general is it easier to purchase a home in another country than it is here in terms of credit, loans/mortgage etc? What would be the best plan or steps for me to take?
How much per year would a single young persson need to earn to live a comfortable living in So. California? By comfortable living, I mean they can rent or own an apartment or house within walking distance to a beach. Have enough money to afford a late model sporty convertible. It doesn't have to be an outrageously expensive Jaguar, but something nice. Have enough dough to eat out a couple times a week, travel, can afford new clothes when they need them, etc., and still have enough leftover to save for retirement and emergencies. How much per year would that person need to earn to afford such a lifestyle in coastal Southern California?
Egypt Retirement from UK Many Questions? My husband and I have bought an apartment in Sharm. We intend to retire there in time. We have many questions around residency, tax, you name it. Would very much like to personally (email) correspond with people who are already living in Sharm and may be able and willing to answer as many daft questions as we come with, over the next few years. Very kindest regards and thanks in advance. I am sorry I should have said, I was hoping to attract UK people who have retired to Egypt/Sharm. No offense to any one else and I will collect all information and I am sure I will email you at some point. If you have speciality, if you could add that in your post it would help Thanks again to all.
I have been asked to do some spring cleaning for an elderly woman, what do I charge? The woman lives in an retirement home and does get weekly housekeeping. The woman wants things done like scrub the floors, clean the wood trim around the doors and windows, wash the walls, just basic spring cleaning. She lives in an one bedroom apartment which consist of a small bathroom, kitchen and living room. What would be a reasonable rate to charge her?
Save for retirement or buy a condo? I'm interested in getting some opinions on this. I'm 37 years old and don't plan to retire for at least 20 years. Over the past few years I've been able to contribute between $700 & $900 monthly on a pre-tax basis to my employer's retirement savings plan. My contributions are currently invested in approximately 75% stocks and 25% bonds. One of the reasons I can contribute so much is that I rent an apartment with 2 other people and so the rent is VERY cheap. Now I'm considering buying a condo here in San Diego (I can't afford a house), but in order to afford the mortgage I will pretty much have to stop contributing to the retirement savings plan. So my dilemma is, what will be most beneficial to me in the long run: continuing to contribute large amounts to my retirement savings plan, or purchasing a condo now in this buyer's market? If more information is needed let me know and I'll be happy to add more details. Having my roommates move into the condo with me was considered and rejected for several reasons. First, I think we've all had about enough of each other. Second, I would then need to buy a 2- or 3-bedroom place instead of the 1-bedroom for just myself. And finally, doing this would put me in a "landlord" type role where I would need to collect rent, address complaints, find a new tenant if someone moved out, etc. All-in-all, I just decided it was too much of a hassle to manage with such a long-term commitment.
Retirement versus paying down debt? I am 44 years old, single, currently no children. I rent my apartment and have $109,000 in student loan debt and a $22,000 auto loan. The student loan interest is 7.75% (KILLING ME). My income last year was about $115,000. I currently divert $225 per pay check or $5,850/year into my 401K plan for two reasons; to build a retirment plan and to get the tax break. I am wondering if I should be putting this money toward my student loan instead. In January 2009 my student loan interest rate will drop to 7.25%. I do already have about $25,000 in a 100% vested profit sharing plan that is going to be rolled into my 401K and I already diverted about $3,500 into the 401K. I am fishing for general opinions. Should I put every extra penny toward paying down my debt or split my money between paying my debt and saving for retirement? I do put 10% of every paycheck into a savings account for a prudent reserve which is currently only about $4,500 because I keep having "emergencies." Interesting. So far 4 answers, 2 on the pay off debt side; 2 on the retirement side. Hard to know which advice to follow. And why did one person say "thanks for the giggles." What does that mean? This is serious, for me at least. Sorry if anyone thinks it's a joke. Please save sarcasm and criticism for another time. I'm seriously trying to decide what to do. I am going to hire a personal advisor but I already work THREE jobs (that's why my income is where it is). I can't work without a car do please don't tell me to sell my car. Anyway, I will be interested to see more conversation but please no sarcasm. What's the point of sarcasm? It certainly doesn't help me at all. Thanks in advance for sincere replies.
Is there anyone who can tell me how to stop hurting? The management where I live, a "retirement community," has made me find a new home for my old tom cat, Ace, and early this afternoon the "estate" from which I adopted him two years ago sent someone over to collect him. You know, as a dog person, I never reckoned that I'd love a cat, and at first it was a trial to look after Ace, feed, brush, and pet him. But in the second year, this old tom and I became good friends. I am 71 but still in the warm embrace of my life's work, the classical theatre, and, at the end of a challenging performance, Ace brightened the hour. He'd been alone much of the day, in my tiny apartment, and, so, he demanded attention. He's a fine fellow, huge, maybe 30 pounds of tom, and he has more money than I do. In her will, his original owner left money for his food and vet bills. But he wasn't stuck up about it. He seemed to just want to be fed, have a clean box, and be loved. I'm missing him already. So long, Ace.
Hi - so you know these retirement developments? Well, it says that if you are over 58 years of age then you can buy an apartment there - I`ve seen one I like but I`m not over 58 - is this a bit age-ist? Racist? Or, like, could I get my Dad to buy it for me and then I move in?? Can they stop me from moving in??
Can you live in an apartment for the rest of your life and never own a home? I don't think I will ever have the luxury of owning a home simply because I don't make enough money. My question is, is there anybody who has been renting for a long time? Can you get through life somewhat happily in this type of living situation? I'm not one who is in need of a lot of luxuries, I'm a simple guy :D I'm able to save some money every month in hopes that when I get old and can't work anymore I will have enough money to support myself throughout my retirement.
Which is the best suburb around Brisbane for a young couple? My boyfriend's dad lives near Woolloongabba, so we were thinking of maybe moving up there for a while, rent a small unit (as they are so much cheaper than in Sydney!)... but I dont know the area at all, so I'm looking for suggestions! We are a young couple (I'm 20, he's 27), but not really into the whole drinking clubbing thing... we'd much rather be near a great big shopping centre, some nice parks, a gym, public transport, and in a safe and friendly neighbourhood. We dont want to pay more than $250/week for a 2 bedroom apartment, so it has to be all of the above but with nice affordable rentals!! Any help would be appreciated... I dont want to end up moving to a giant retirement suburb, or a neighbourhood where I wont feel safe!
Geelong, OR ?...a somewhat clueless couple seeking a retirement spot? Wife and I have Au. residency visa, but plan on coming later this year. I understand Geelong or other Melbourne suburb deserves a look. Other than Perth, which we visited briefly, we are utterly clueless about the country as a whole. We are concentrating on Melbourne or Brisbane suburbs, or nearby med size city. The best example of what we're after is Christchurch NZ, in terms of public transport, well supplied food stores, and shopping. Well, we DO like to eat. And yes, shop. Sigh...my wife, anyway. We plan on spending a period of no less than three months in the area which any kind heart may want to suggest to us. Here too, I suppose we would greatly appreciate some guidance. By this I mean that we will be seeking a better quality apartment which can be rented for said period. A warm thank you in advance. Thad Maybe pamperedpuss and TonyB should "have at it" ?. I like puss' positive point. Thank you friend, appreciated a lot. I do hope and believe OZ offers more than than this country, Italy. After over three decades in the US and a stint in Malaysia I just feek too homesick from an English speaking / Am.Engl environment. Achingly so. HIGH CRIME uh ?....
Buying homes as investments. What should the legal maximum be? We all know its getting rediculous how many these flat addicts are buying in order to get rich quick. Most people have noticed flats, apartments, homes, even mansions lying empty in order to safeguard a wealthy retirement for the chosen few. The government should obviously set a maximum, but just how many? 2 I reckon, after that it becomes an "intention to supply".
Brisbane proper, suburb OR ?...a somewhat clueless couple seeking a retirement spot? Wife and I have Au. residency visa, but plan on coming later this year. Thank you heaps for all the extensive detail, I am grateful for the time you took. Tasmania, is definitely one spot to look into. It appears, anyhow. Anything but Italy my birth country Italy at this point. I have lived over three decades in the US, too achingly homesick for an English speaking anvironment. Italy is 12 hrs behind OZ on the clock and a few centuries behind in varying degrees in various aspects of occasionally frustrating daily living. Thank you again.
How much money would Carrie Bradshaw really need to make? From the Sex in the City, how much money would Carrie Bradshaw really need to make, per month, to support her lifestyle, as portrayed in the program? Say Carrie lived in a rent controlled apartment, has no car or car insurance, has minimal health insurance, save minimal towards retirement, and saves no money. Then, how much money would she need to make for her cost of living, and to support her lunching-fashion-drinking life?

Germany as a "retirement" option??? I'm in love with Bavaria, and would like to move there, but it isn't really feasible now or anytime in the near future... I am thinking, though, in about 10 to 20 years of trying to move there, when I'm in my 50s. But I'm really not sure about so many things.. 1) Assuming I live in a suburb or smaller town (i.e. Garmisch), how expensive would a decent sized apartment run? 2) Do I really need a car? 3) How difficult would it be for stay, either as a resident alien or by obtaining German citizenship? Both my mom's parents & my Dad were naitve Germans. 4) What kind of job could I get??? All I'd like is something to get by... 5)I speak German, but not very well. That said, when I'm actually using it, I pick it up pretty quickly. How much would that hurt me in getting a job??? Any help would be much appreciated-- I know Germany as a tourist, but there's so much more involved with actually moving there...
What should I do with my extra income? I have a great job and great opportunity to invest. I work at a college and bring home about $1450 a month. My housing is paid for by the school. I have an apartment on-campus and a meal plan during the year. Cable, internet, phone, electricty....all paid for. My car is paid for. My cc bills will be paid off this month. My only expenses are my cell phone bill and a $170/month payment for student loans (consolidated). I'm 30, working on my master's, and would like to buy a house and start a family within the next 5-10 years. I'm also worried about starting late in life saving for retirement. So, what should I do with the money? I have a savings account. I have about $500 in I-bonds. The school also puts in 4% of my salary into an retirement account and will match up to 7%. Should I do that? More bonds? Focus on the savings account? Roth or Traditional IRA (confused on which would be best for me)? Pay off my student loans first? Invest in gold? - dad's suggestion :)
Do you plan to escape from your retirement career as a live-in babysitter for your grandchildren and? great grandchildren? People seem to be living and working longer, and I noticed in a few cases among my older friends, and even in my own family, that some people expect retired grands to hang around to baby sit for them, or perhaps even raise their kids for them. A friend of mine recently sold her house to her granddaughter for picking up the mortgage, then she moved into her own apartment. Everyone is unhappy about it. But why? Doesn't a woman who is close to 80 years old deserve a little rest? Another friend has been raising her 3 granddaughters for years, though her son, their father, still lives at home. One of the girls was arrested recently. My friend is planning her escape soon, so she doesn't end up with a serious medical problem from the stress. I have a grandchild and I would just love to live nera her and help out. This is different. I'm talking about people whose children and grandchildren are looking for full time live in unpaid help with their kids - people who do not do much to raise their own kids. Is it fair to put this job off on an 80 year old woman? Come on!
Please help me find a warm home for a homeless cat? Hi, I am sad beacuse I see this beatiful , friendly and warm cat at my work in Phx, AZ . I work part time but since I have been there this homeless black cat has been coming around , very skinny and looking sick. staff and patients started feeding the cat , but my new boss gave us a ultimatum to not let us give him anymore food. I can't stand seeing this warm and very friendly cat die like that ..I have tried to take him to non-kill shelters but they were full, and I don't want to take him to shelter that would kill him.he is an adult cat , probably will need some medical assistance (ie: vaccines) I can't have him because I already have 3 cats and live in small apartment . I am willing to pay the first vet visit and initial vaccines and some food supplies for 10 days. If someone is willing to give him or help him have a warm and caring home that is commited to having him for life .please help me find a non-killing shelter, or retirement home,or home for this cat. (AZ or CA)
if I begin to use my 401k to make house payments...Is there another solution? I could be seperating from my spouse. He is interviewing for a promotion and will be moving to another state. I want to keep our home and can keep it If I use 401k money each month to help pay the mortgage. I would also use part of the 401k to pay my husband his half of the home. ( I know I loose 30% or so of the retirement fund in penalties and taxes.) The mortgage is about what I bring home each month. Should I just sell the home and go to an efficiency apartment and keep my 401k in tact. It's really so hard to give up my life and home. I will not touch my retirement. Apartment living, here I come again!
Senior renter rights.? Can an elderly person be thrown out of a retirement community (apartments) because they have become disabled? My mother has a full time aide but the management company wants her to move out.
What is considered a comfortable salary if you wanna stay in NYC?own a car...rent a apartment in town? -for a couple with 1 toddler -own a honda -stay in a 2bedroom apt in a reasonable hood -eat dinner out on the weekends -have decent lunches - not just hotdogs/burgers -contribute to a retirement savings plan and have some savings leftover for yearly holidays to like europe/asia and maybe wkend getaway/ trips to the folks out of town like once every 2 mths or so -have a spouse work part time(earning enough for like her pocket $$) while taking care of the kid -80K-100k after tax at the min is what i'm guessing gabound75> thanks....i probably think that nyc will be more exp then...probably need more...unless i cut down on the holidays and maybe not eat out every wkend...unless my wife like brings in more $$$ sonofagunk> u really got me thinking now...sheesh...it's almost like out of the question now...and a new jersey commute isn't what i was going for and working in NJ is something i've not even considered...and i don't think i can bargain for more $$...ditch the car ..and hopefully my wife finds fulltime work there too..and then maybe...are there any lawyers /acct who kept help with getting the taxes to like 20-30 %..hmm...and rentals ...i was figuring 2 to 3 grand max but not 3.5!?
