Has anyone bought a retirement place in Hove or Brighton? I am wondering whether to move to the seaside when I retire and was interested in the Brighton area because there is plenty going on. I'd be interested to hear about those retirement apartments (eg. Mccarthy & Stone) you see advertised.
How much of my retirement contributions will I get back if I leave my job? I'm employed with the local public school system. I began working for them eight years ago. Through my employment, I have been having an amount deducted from my check to be placed in a retirement account through the school system. The system has been adding funds to it as well, but what I am concerned about is the part I have been contributing. I have decided to leave my job and stay home with my kids full-time. Since my retirement account is not a 401K, it can't be "rolled over". So, I am assuming the school system will have to return my retirement contributions to me, minus what they have contributed and local taxes. Am I correct? If so, will this amount automatically be federally taxed, or will I have to report it on my next tax return? I'm so confused! I don't want to call my employer to ask these questions if I can help it, because I don't want it to sound like I'm more concerned about my money than all they have done for me over the past few years.

Both of us do not have any good guidance from any experienced elders regarding anything in life. So far we have not saved a penny for our retirement. Experienced people please guide me on the follwing: 1) If we do not save will the governments of these two places help us in futureafter retirement? 2) Is setting up a parallel income recommemded? 3) What the conditions of old people who have not saved all thier life (will they be provided medical help)? 4) Is it prudent to save monthly, yearly? 5) Do children take care of poor parents? (My husband is currently well off. And we give the best to our parents and children. Will we too be taken care of similarly)? 6) Many parents who are financilally dependent on their children in their later years are insecure and encourage disharmony in thier children's married life. Why?
Where is the best place to invest money needed BEFORE retirement? With smart money management, there's an outside change Hubby and I will be able to contribute enough to our 401(k)s so that we can possibly retire in our mid-50s. However, retirement account money can't be tapped until a certain age. Since we hope to retire in our mid-50s, does it make sense to stash a portion of our money in an account we CAN tap at that age? If so, should we choose a Roth IRA (so we can withdraw contributions if we retire in our mid-50s), or should we choose a regular investment account? Thanks for any advice/guidance!
What do you think of Target Retirement Mutual Funds? I am opening one with T. Rowe Price - Target Retirement 2040. Next year, my husband will open one with Vanguard. Since we are novice investors, are these the best places for us to park our retirement savings?
Where is the best place to put my money for retirement? The company I work for froze our pension. I have a 401k with a decent company match. I add to my savings every week, but with nothing more being added to my retirement. I was thinking about reducing the amount I put into the savings and starting an IRA. Can you add to an IRA on a weekly basis? Is this the best way to supplement my retirement?

Where to live for early retirement? Does anyone have any suggestions for cheap places for a Canadian to make an early retirement to? I'm considering China (Shanghai), Thailand, Argentina and Uruguay. Any suggestions on ways to estimate my living expenses in different countries or other cheap places to live (stretch a fixed income as far as possible)? Which country would you recommend retiring to and why? I'd want to have high-speed internet, air conditioning and my own living space (exclusive use of a kitchen and bathroom) at a minimum.

Best Southern US Place For Retirement? My husband and I are fond of Eastern Tennessee and any place where there is mountains, camping, fishing and music played downtown on weekends, craft festivals, farmer's market's, etc. We're starting to think about a place for retirement and this would be some of the things that we would like plus we would need to be close to good health care. We would love to hear about anyplace in the US that you think sounds like this. We don't live in Eastern Tennessee but live in South Arkansas right now and have for years.
Why Are People Buying Holiday and Retirement Homes In Bulgaria? With Health, Hygine and Hospital and Emergency Services at such a primitive level it is virtually suicide to spend any amount of time holidaying in Bulgaria and other former Communist Block Countries! Even monor injuries are treated in barbaric a ludacrus ways! My son had sunburn on his feet and the hospital socked his feet in oil and bandaged them tight. They kept cooking until he was screaming in pain! We had to cut them off and force his feet into a bath of cold water! They do not have the faintest idea on basic first aid! While we were waiting in the hospital an English man was brought in who had had a heart attack and been waiting 5 hours for a ambulance. The taxi drivers in the resort would not take him to hospital! BUY IN HAST REGRET IT AT LEISURE! Spain is still the best place in the world for holiday and retirement homes! Today the medicine and treatment is first class and they have the best transplant record in Europe!
Moving money from work retirement fund? My husband is about 5 years from retirement. For many years he worked for a company that was sold to another company. The retirement fund he accrued is in stock and is currently losing about $3000 per quarter. He would like to take the money out of the fund before any more is gone and place it in some type of retirement account with our bank. What could he do that would be tax deferred and earn some interest and be safe?

Do you pay taxes on lump sum received from ex husband for his retirement? My fiance received a large lump sum, in the form of a cashiers check, from her ex husband after he retired. Is that taxable income? taxable gift? She says since it was in the divorce decree that she receives a certain percentage of his retirement that it would be considered alimony. Since he always pays in cash or check, where would she place the income on the tax files if no tax forms are ever sent out to her, ie: 1044 etc.
If Christchurch is best NZ retirement spot, which city in Australia would compare favorably with her ? We are an Italian couple who decided to roam the globe for a few years following retirement, currently residing in Malaysia, and seriously looking to find a place to settle down. We like Australasia a lot. Very different from Europe and relatively unspoiled and carefree, just what "the Doctor ordered". We enjoy NZ a lot, but summers are short. Only visited Perth last year for a few days, but have great expectations for Oz. How about Adelaide, for example. Any ideas ? Suggestions ?. Any input would be appreciated. TIA ! Thad

Has anyone heard of any chess event or activity in southern us? Preferably by a sea side town. A friend is a serious chess addict and wants a Christmas to New Year's vacation but isn't much of a vacation without chess--to him. Some seaside place in the southern US known for chess activities would do. Maybe a university retirement place. Know of any? This guy is very GOOD and loves to play the best, particularly speed chess. Even a good player or two in a place like that would likely do. Maybe there's a cruise for chesters. THAT would be PERFECT. All suggestions appreciated.
What makes placing the elderly in a retirement home so bad? I have an aunt. She's about 85. She's never been married and doesn't have any children. We used to live together 'til last year when a slot was opened for her in a home for the aged where she's currently staying at as of the moment. My other relatives and friends are criticizing me bec I had placed her there. You see I live in a country wherein putting people in homes is not very common and it's considered even cruel. I've had this on me for the longest time and honestly I'm ready to explode any minute now. I'm just so sick and tired of all this talking behind my back. People think ill of me bec of what I had done.
will you help me with retirement rollover screwed by new employer? When I left my old employer for this new one, the retirement program at the new place told me that I could rollover the retirement disbursement from the old place. So I called the old place and they and I followed the new place's instructions. The old place sent me a check as a disbursement made out to the retirement program of the new place "for benefit of" me. I called the new place back to find out how to send the check to them and how to get the forms they had said I needed. I was told firmly that they do not accept rollovers, that in order to deposit funds from another place I would have to purchase service credits and only if I qualify to do so (it's a government thing). Which as a new employee, I do not. They didn't care that someone else had told me different. So now I am stuck with this distribution in a check made out to the new company's retirement program which they will not accept! What do I do? The check is not made out to me so I can't just put the money somewhere else.
